Change Control

The contract was signed six months ago for this two-year, multi-million dollar project. You were not involved in contract negotiations or setting up procedures for managing changes. Now you are being swamped with change requests from the sponsor and from inside your organization. What kinds of changes should be approved?

A. Changes that decrease the overall project cost
B. Changes that decrease the overall project schedule
C. Changes that are most beneficial to the entire project
D. Changes approved by management

I vote for C.

Answers A and B are incorrect, mostly because cost decrease and schedule decrease is not always beneficial to the project. And it's not the task of PM to decide what is beneficial. PM has to work inside the constrains approved by project sponsors in the Project Charter.

Answer D says about changes already approved, while the questions asks - what changes should be approved. Thus, the question is invalid.

Answer C is right. "Beneficial to the entire project" means beneficial according to the project charter.

D. is my answer.

In project of any size can be lots of changes. And they all will affect Scope, Schedule and Cost. Decreasing is not always benefical for this three. But even if it is - it's not PM's problem. He will proceed with only approved changes.
